In the spring of 2020, as the world entered an unprecedented period of isolation, two brothers in China made a decision that would eventually reshape the global toy industry. Zhang Mingchi and Zhang Liangchi, confined to their home like billions of others, turned their attention to a fluffy companion—a pet cat named Puff. What began as lighthearted content creation around their feline friend would evolve into Puff Media, a digital marketing powerhouse, and ultimately into ToyBeta, one of North America's most exciting new toy retail channels.
That Little Puff, as the cat became known online, captured hearts across social media platforms. The brothers' creative approach to pet content—combining humor, relatable scenarios, and genuine affection—resonated with audiences worldwide. Before long, That Little Puff had amassed over 90 million followers, making it one of the largest pet IP accounts globally. But for the Zhang brothers, this was never just about a cute cat. It was their masterclass in understanding content, community, and the algorithms that drive modern commerce.
By 2024, Puff Media had established itself as a leading digital marketing agency with first-tier agency status on both TikTok and Google. The company had served hundreds of brands seeking to navigate the complex waters of global expansion. Yet Zhang Mingchi, now CEO, saw a bigger opportunity. China's toy manufacturing belt—particularly around Guangzhou and Panyu—was producing world-class collectible toys, blind boxes, and designer figurines. But most Western consumers had no access to these products, and the brands behind them lacked the expertise to reach global markets.
Enter ToyBeta. Launched as Puff Media's self-operated channel brand, ToyBeta was designed to bridge this gap. Drawing on everything the team had learned from building That Little Puff's global audience—from content creation to community management to algorithm optimization—ToyBeta set out to become the definitive destination for Chinese collectible toys in North America.
Today, ToyBeta operates out of a 2,000-square-meter hub in New York City, curating products from over 40 of China's top toy and blind box brands. The company hosts weekly creator meetups, regular livestream events, and has become a top-ranked toy collection store on TikTok Shop North America. What started with a cat named Puff has become a global platform connecting China's finest toy manufacturers with enthusiastic collectors across the Western world.
'The spirit of what we built with That Little Puff lives on in ToyBeta,' says Zhang Mingchi. 'It's about creating joy, building community, and using digital tools to connect people with products they love. Puff was our first global star. Now we're building a stage for hundreds of incredible Chinese toy brands to shine.'
